Another day in Zermatt…

saw the BV crew sharing a training lane with some female World Cup athletes from Slovakia, Poland, & Italy who competed at the 2010 Olympics in Vancouver.  Probably the best experience our young athletes have had in their racing career!  I must say they stepped it up a notch and all skied better than I have ever seen them ski.  Not kidding!!  I am very proud of each of them!  We used a timing system and were between 2.5 to 6 seconds off the pace they were setting on roughly a 40 second GS course.

It was an amazing day!

At the end of training we posed for pictures with a couple of the athletes for the scrap book and one of the World Cup athletes shared her memories of being a young girl with a similar experience which fueled her passion for ski racing. Then we skied off to Italy for lunch at Plateau Rosa from which you can see Mont Blanc, France or turn around and throw a stone back into Switzerland.  Very incredible views in every direction.

A New Forest Grows at BVSC

On Saturday April 28th, BVSC held ITs Spring Beautification/Tree Planting.

Skeet Sutherland, Certified sustainable forest management planner, started the brisk morning off by sharing some lessons in sustainable forestry. Skeet will be conducting a Sustainable Forest Management Plan for the club, and thus the plantings that our beautification team did are a part of a bigger picture and greater plan.  This plan will include both planting and thinning days.  It will include transplanting and and re-designing landscapes.  All in the name of continuing to operate a successful ski club while contributing to a sustainable future through our land-use management.  The team of 20 members, staff, and volunteers planted in total more than 100 trees! And they didn’t just plant them; they dug the holes, spread the mulch, watered each one, and flagged it with care.  Better yet, we’re not just growing another evergreen patch, bare of diversity.  Under Skeet’s expertise, the group planted a variety of native species: Sumac, Red Oak, Nannyberry, White Birch, Red Oiser Dogwood, and Black Walnut. They were planted in a spot that had been identified by operations and Skeet as a significant space in need of trees, and they were planted with a “habitat” approach (promoting habitat for the other “residents” of Beaver Valley).

The morning warmed up and when the work was done, it ended with the traditional Beautification BBQ.  Thanks to everyone for getting your hands dirty, we hope you enjoyed the morning and look forward to seeing you at the fall Beautification Day – details TBA.

Dryland Training Date Change…

Please be aware that the date for Dryland Training Fitness Testing with Janique Taylor at Leaside High School in Toronto has been change from Saturday April 28 to Saturday May 5th from 9am-12pm.   All additional dates remain the same June 2, September 15 & October 2nd.

Snowboard Cross Club Championship Results

The second annual Beaver Valley Snowboard Cross aka Boardercross Championship, the newest of the club’s championship events, took place last Sunday afternoon on the Long John cross course. One of the best cross courses in Ontario, Long John was shaped to perfection offering three “whoops” off the start, followed by four high speed giant banked berms and finishing with a jump and series of rollers. For those riders who did not want to navigate the faster jump line there was an alternative bi-pass lane. Rather than race in head-to-head heats, riders raced one at a time in timed runs for expediency and safety. The course was fast, fun, and exciting! Congrats to all of the boardercrossers who competed. Please see podium results and photos below.

Sat Mar.3 – Roxy Ride Day Bonanza for the Snowboard Park Girls

The finale event for all Roxy Ride program girls includes a fun morining slopestyle event in Paradise Progression Park, free BBQ lunch in the Hike Park, Air Bag session in the afternoon, followed by rail jam and awards in the Hike Park.

FSO Craigleith Slopestyle results Sat February 11

A huge turnout of 70 slopestyle dudes descended on Craigleith last Saturday to show their tricks in the park.

Vote yes for Ontario Track 3 Ski Association for the disabled

Track 3 needs your vote to make it to the final round to to be eligible for a new grant program backed by Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment Team Up Foundation.  This is a new grant program this year- a total of $200,000 will be available across 4 charitable grants with $50,000 to each of the 4 charities who win.

Track 3 will be undertaking a renovation project of the Track 3 Portable located at Hockley Valley Resort in awarded the grant.

You may vote daily until February 20th.

Beaver Valley’s biggest contest is back for 2012 and elevated to a TTR (Ticket To Ride) 3- Star global snowboard tour points event for amateur and pro riders alike with $10,000 in cash and prizes. Hosted in Beaver’s Playground Park, the PARK BRAWL features one of the longest, full featured slopestyle courses in the country with two separate lines, one for advanced riders and one for Groms and intermediate riders.

BV’S New BAG JUMP Will Debut At Next Week’s SNOWBOARD & FREESKI Camps
